Alive, Pearl Jam, 1991
Is something wrong? Well, of course it is, Eddie. My No. 1 problem right now is: It's way too early on a Saturday for me to be awake. Ugh. Such is my life.
Yes, I'm alive but I'm not fully awake, yet. I'm in pre-dawn deep simmer mode. I'm pretty sure I was just set free from a weird "Alive" montage-like dreamland with my high school boyfriend. Now, Stone Gossard's opening guitar riff to "Alive" is stuck on mini repeat in my brain. I'm not mad at all -- iconic -- but hearing "Alive" on top of emerging from an oddly chill 1980s boyfriend dream is a little numbing.
Here's the thing: Yes, I like Pearl Jam and yes, I like "Alive" but I am definitely absolutely not a super mega fan of either. Seriously, we're talking strong like of both as opposed to love. Sure, there are PJ songs I LOVE LOVE and I love so much that Eddie is literally still alive -- so many of his 90s band contemporaries are gone -- but I'm not one of those Pearl Jam preachers.
Yesterday, though, something changed. I surprised myself by completely and totally rocking out to "Alive." My Eddie Vedder voice was just right and my Eddie game face was on point. It was a whole thing. It was like the flip of a switch. After 34 years of being kinda meh about "Alive," I think I'm in love with it now. Go figure. I love it when that happens. Thank you, music.
I'm glad we talked.
Happy Saturday!
