Crossfire, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, 1989
Well, hello world! The universe is showing out this morning. "Crossfire?" Seriously? Is that really necessary? Wow. What in the world does the day have in store? I'm a little scared now.
Mercy, I love Stevie Ray Vaughan. This song, though, has such a heavy message and carries an even heavier load. If I'm not mistaken, "Crossfire" was written about him and his addiction by someone he loved. It's from the album he made after getting sober, too. "Crossfire" is how desperation sounds when you know something's gotta give but have no idea how to make a change.
"Crossfire" has always felt like a simultaneously positive and negative (overwhelming) force to me. I love the urgency of this conversation -- it never gets old. The call and response between Stevie's emotional voice and his sinister strat -- good ole Number One -- is just the coolest thing ever. Number One is literally back-talking the entire time. It's giving all the quips and all the pushback. I need more of that in my life -- sass and that SRV stank face.
Yesterday, I thought a lot about evolution and personal growth. Then, waking up to SRV's "Crossfire" just now added another layer of clarity for me. Life is filled with crossroads. Yes. Life is filled with crossroads and crossfire. Hmmm. Life is filled with times we're stranded in the crossfire while standing at the crossroads. Yeah it is.
Happy Monday!
