We're Going to Be Friends, White Stripes, 2002
Well, I didn't see this one coming. Really? Of all the great performances at this weekend's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, one of my least favorite White Stripes tunes is the spaghetti that sticks to the wall? What?
Ahhh. Wait. I hear you universe ... I know exactly what this means. You're saying fall is here, right? No, that can't be the message my psyche is sending because it's a ridiculous 28 degrees this morning in the Deep South. I'm feeling that "We're Going to Be Friends" looping in my brain is sending a message about joy and harmony. Yes. I get it. The takeaway is about the power of our relationship with music. I'm in.
In my lifetime, we've seen the Rock Hall shift to a more inclusive format. My music purist friends don't like it at all but of late, inductees represent genres that are most definitely not defined as Rock. Whereas I don't really understood the need to resist this trend, I think there's a simple fix and it's not to segregate or exclude genres -- let's just change the Rock Hall's name. Easy peasy.
I would rather have a diverse (Music) Hall of Fame reflecting all types of music instead of armchair rock critics continuing to impose their short-sighted definition of "rock" on music lovers. Let's make it happen.
Walk with me. It's time to learn.
