Emmylou, First Aid Kit, 2012

Well, how about that? Thank you, universe, for waking me with the strength of Emmylou looping in my brain. Ahhh, Emmylou ... a song for the ages. Such a brilliant song filled with the power of hope needed to persevere the human condition.

There are so many life lessons in this song's lyrics. It blows my mind that the Soderberg sisters wrote Emmylou when they were barely even teenagers. From first listen, Emmylou hooked me deep. Yes, it was my First Aid Kit gateway song 13 years ago. I connected with this song and with this indie-folk duo in a way that is very special and is proving to be an everlasting bond.

Truthfully, I didn't think it was possible but this past week's daily walk added even more reasons why I love Emmylou so much. I had a brief exchange with a friend that was Gram Parsons adjacent. It dawned on me how the reference to Emmylou and Gram in this song is not about reveling in finding the perfect partner in life, it's about finding the right partner for everyday life. Finding the partner who makes you better. Whoa.

BTW, if you don't know these Swedish sisters, you really should discover them ASAP. Sibling harmonies that will melt you. Yes, yes, yes to every single song in First Aid Kit's catalog. Trust me. Go listen now. Do it. They're the real deal.

Happy Saturday!
