Closer to Fine, Indigo Girls, 1989
Hello, friends. Right now, my head is spinning with several songs all tangled up and swirling in a bizarre medley. One of the songs in my head is an iconic 70s classic rock tune by one of my all-time favorite bands but it's losing the battle in my headspace this morning to the Indigo Girls' Closer to Fine. Yeah, I know, never thought I'd write a sentence such as that ... is what it is, just sayin'.
Not gonna lie, Closer to Fine is one of those songs I fell in love with at first listen. It is a constant staple of my life's soundtrack. There's just something about it -- actually, there's lots of something about it. I love the gruff in Emily Sailers' voice so much. I love the karmic harmony she has with Amy Ray. I love these lyrics. Very powerful words, friends.
Closer to Fine is a malleable narrative that keeps growing with me. This song gets deeper and more poignant to me with every passing minute of every day. It's a song about our natural curiosity. It's a song about realizing that not all questions have an answer and learning to live with that truth.
This morning, in light of a precious friend's passing, I'm seeing that Closer to Fine is about living in the moment free from all the weight of the unnecessary questions. Maybe everything isn't so complicated after all.
Happy Saturday! Lean into the crooked line, friends.
