Car Wash, Rose Royce, 1976

Well, how about that, friends? Do you hear it? That's one of the most iconic (opening) hand-clap sequences in the history of music coaxing me to take on this Monday. Challenge accepted but fair warning, boss, I feel pretty bad so I may act a fool. šŸ˜„

Some of y'all may be surprised by how often this song is my welcomed earworm. Granted, it's mostly the line about how you might not get rich but it's better than digging a ditch. Yeah. That's one of my most favorite "misheard" lyrics ever. One guess what little kid me thought it said instead of ditch. 🤣 I still sing it my way, just so you know.

I have loved Car Wash since the beginning of time. I wonder if Car Wash is patient zero for my origin love story with funk? Since radio raised me, I'm thinking I most likely heard it real time on the one and only Q107. Was there funkadelic Fridays back in 1976? I know the movie is surely the root of my love for Richard Pryor. Gotta love the rise of cable and satellite TV in the early 80s. Am I right? 😁

In four sleeps, one of my favorite local artists will bring this song to life from the Shoals Theatre stage -- I see you, Natasha Nix -- and I can't wait. Work and work, y'all.

Get your tickets for Muscle Shoals Meets the 70s, friends. You don't want to miss this rock show, I promise.
