Glory Box, Portishead, 1994
Listen. Do you hear that deafening sound? It's the sound of the universe enjoying a good laugh at my expense. I hear it and I know it all too well. Good morning, Dummy.
Glory Box is a perfect song, y'all. Give me a reason to love you ... so very haunting in its desperate, yet sort of nonchalant, plea. Ah yes, the mysterious power of the one and only Beth Gibbons, friends. Beth gave us a stellar solo album in 2024 that launched me into a (renewed) obsession with Portishead. Sure, a Portishead deep dive is never a bad thing, but who knew Glory Box would provide the backing track for my total exhaustion? Didn't see that one coming but, OK.
I'm so tired of playing -- sing it, Beth. I don't know how June was sheer perfection but then July came along and erased all the good. It's as if everything reset to a place where the good literally never happened. I am so very anxious to close the door on this crazy unacceptable chapter of my (work) life, y'all. Give me a reason to love you.
I decree Glory Box to be my goodbye to negativity and nonsense. Yes. Glory Box is my hello to positivity, productivity, and empowerment. Yes. I am so very OK with Glory Box being my anthem du jour. A thousand flowers could bloom. Right?
Is this the beginning of forever and ever?
We'll see. Happy Monday!
