Lunatic Fringe, Red Rider, 1981
Picture this: It's early evening on a Tuesday and I'm chilling in my chaise lounge on my back deck enjoying a (slight) reprieve from this oppressive Alabama heat. Book in hand, I'm lost in the pages ... but then, the faint sound of music in the distance makes its way to my ears. I drop my book, cock my head to the side -- a la Nipper (the RCA pup) in heightened curiosity mode. I think, "Oh my gosh. Who's playing Lunatic Fringe??!"
Thank you, unknown cool cat in the hood for gifting me this iconic earworm.
Woo wee, y'all. I can't even put into words how hearing this masterpiece of a song for the first time in ages made me feel. I'm such a goober, I know, but my gut reaction was: Hmm. What music through yonder window breaks? It is the Lunatic Fringe and I am so totally down. LOL. In the twilight's last gleaming ...
Mercy. What a great song, y'all. It has these sinisterly cool vibes and soul-stirring riffs. Listen to the lyrics. It's a call-to-action, ya know ... yeah. Lunatic Fringe oozes an eerie melodrama that hits way too close to home these days. Lunatic Fringe = a heavy dystopian warning, friends. Who's listening?
I'm thinking this is my new walk-up song. Yes. Lunatic fringe, I know you're out there.
Can you feel the resistance?
Happy Saturday!
