I'm Goin' Down, Mary J. Blige, 1994
I LOVE how this song opens. It's a burst of big sound that turns on a dime to being so very quiet and intimate. That's how I feel most days, btw. On any given day, this chorus runs through my brain at least a few times. "I'm goin' down ... cause you ain't around ... my whole world is upside down." True. I miss my former life so bad.
Mary J. is such a great storyteller, y'all. Isn't it the coolest thing ever how she commands space and time? It's as if you don't have a choice but to listen to her. Sure, you want to hear what she's saying but her voice is so compelling that listening is like being under her spell. Yes, please. Sing it, goddess.
Me and Mary J. go way way back. (Thank you, Chris T.) This song is everything forever and ever amen. Yes. Mary J. always sees me and this morning is no different. That's right -- welcome to my demise, friends. I'm going down and you have a front row seat to watch the full-on old lady transformation. The old lady keeps winning and getting the best of me but I did laugh really hard in a super uninhibited way more than once this past week and that was good, y'all.
I may be going down but I'm going down swinging and laughing. Bet.
Happy Saturday!
