Money (That's What I Want), Flying Lizards, 1979

Damn the man. Save the Empire.

This song represents two truths you should know about life:

1. Great songs live forever.

2. One of the most beautifully powerful things ever to exist is a perfect movie soundtrack.

Sure, the three versions of this song I know about all are good -- it's a Barry Gordy Motown hit factory creation after all, duh -- but this (Flying Lizards) version is everything to me. Empire Records (one of my all-time favorite movies) has a great soundtrack but this song goes hand-in-hand with the movie for me. I will forever see Empire Records when I hear this song. I will forever dance like Marc and Eddie when I hear this song. So nostalgic ... working in a record store in the 90s was great, y'all.

This past Saturday was my favorite "holiday" -- Record Store Day. Yes, RSD is every day in my life but about 15 years ago, Record Store Day was created to promote supporting local and regional independent record stores. And, that's what I do, not just on RSD, but 99.9% of the time I buy a new album, I support an independent store. Be like Emmy.

Step up, Gen Z! Support independent record stores. How about breathing new life into this jewel of a song, too. Please activate it once again -- somebody get busy.

Happy Monday!
