I Will Survive, Cake, 1997

The universe is so funny, y'all. Two great new singles by two of my favorite bands dropped yesterday (I ❤️ new music Friday, btw) but did I wake up with either of those as my earworm? Nope. Cake's funky little odd spin on this Gloria Gaynor classic is playing loud and clear in my brain and I'm not mad at all. Quite the opposite, actually -- ahh, yeah.

Hearing this song always does wonders for my psyche. Cake's late 1990s translation of this powerful late 1970s anthem plays like a cool early 2000s hepcat pep talk for me. The power is still there but it's all chill and matter-of-fact instead of angsty and restless. It's all Cake-a-fied. That vibe is exactly what I need in my life right now.

This is one of the greatest covers of all time -- fight me on it. I remember when it came out, it was so very unexpected. At first, it had me like, "OK? What is happening right now?" (Remember Cake's cover of Jolene? Super questionable.) But, I went from 0 to 60 during that first listen and landed in the, "Whoa, that's so cool" lane for infinity. Cake is so uninhibited and brave. Cake is art.

Happy Saturday!
