Valley Girl, Moon Zappa (Frank Zappa), 1982
OK, fine. Here's a PSA for all you old people/ie my fellow Gen X tribe: There's no need to be alarmed over Gen Alpha speak. Like, oh my God -- calm down, space cadets.
And, no, this song has not aged well. The nostalgia it evokes is nice but it's a hard listen. It stands strong, though, representing our awesome 80s roots. It's like a mini history of our sigma driven 80s world -- I am sure. Never forget, we had our own secret language way before Gen Alpha was crashing out, y'all.
This gruzz was raised on valley girl dialect and I admit, my lexicon is still chock-full of tubular 80s rizz. I can "fer sure," "awesome," and "dude" with the best of them. If you've met me, you know I unironically totally talk the talk on the daily. Sorry?
From a "which came first" perspective, I'm fairly certain I saw the Valley Girl video on Mtv first then the speak followed and infiltrated the youth. It's the same with Gen Alpha -- instead of being influenced by Mtv, most of their secret language has roots in song lyrics, viral memes/videos, and TikToks.
In retrospect, this is a pretty ridiculous song. We really lived this level of humor in the 80s. Think, 6-7. Sure, the Valley girls left a lasting impression but I appreciate this song most for introducing me to Frank Zappa. Also, Valley Girl is proof a hit song can be written about pretty much anything. Facts.
Now, get out there and have a totally bitchin' Monday. Good boy.
