Inside Out, Eve 6, 1998
I heard this song yesterday for the first time in forever. Every single time I hear it, it's 1998 again. For 3+ minutes, I slip inside its poetic lyrical mantra and experience true late 90s bliss. Love.
I love how this song starts with words, y'all. Seriously, like there's one note then BAM, right into the chorus. What a really interesting, fun, and unique song. So easy to sing along to -- you have to stop what you're doing and sing along.
Inside Out is a gift. I just stinking love it so much. It's a smart song. It's a wordsmith's song. So so so many words -- all delivered at just the right pace in just the right tone. I love all the words -- I know all the words. I'm singing them right now and I'm sure I'll be singing them for days (maybe even weeks) to come.
This song is one of the most perfect examples of a poem living its life as a song. I interviewed many songwriters in my previous life as a journalist. Even the ones who record voice notes, usually have an old school notebook or journal filled with song/lyric ideas and poetic fragments. This song comes straight from a poet's well-loved notebook. Bet. Thank you, Max, for sharing.
When the band gets back together, this is going on the setlist. Tie me to the bed post.
