Everybody Hurts, R.E.M., 1992
Listen. I know you're doing your best. I'm doing my best, too. We're all doing our best and never forget that "best" efforts look different one person to the next. Everybody hurts sometimes.
Is there a more powerful truth (in song) about the human condition than Everybody Hurts? I swear, the emotion captured and conveyed in this song is absolutely phenomenal. This song is a treasure. Gospel. Iconic. So very honest and cathartic. It's a common thread.
A sense of immense peace and hope fills me up from the very first note. I get choked up every single time and I always give in and sing out in solidarity through my tears. I'm wiping my eyes while writing this -- I wonder how many healing tears I've shed while listening to this song. Gratitude.
Friends -- it's our profound responsibility to make sure every rising generation has this song as a tool to persevere. Right? This song is universal and timeless. This song is self care -- actually, it was self care before that was even a thing. Michael Stipe is the most intentional and conscientious lyricist of my lifetime. Use this gift/song as he intended. Spread the word.
Now it's time to sing along. You are not alone. Hold on.
Happy Monday/MLK Jr. Day. Decide to stick with love.
