I Love Rock 'n' Roll, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, 1981
Never forget that I earned this blackheart and I wear it with pride. Yeah. I don't know what that means but it sounded good in my head. Y'all, Joan Jett absolutely destroyed me back in 1981 and I keep coming back for more. Life. Changing. Seriously, Joan is my OG mentor. She planted that rebellion seed deep inside me 44 years ago and nurtured it with strong independent empowerment that serves me every single day.
Several Joan songs have been my buddies this week but this one stays front and center because it started it all. Me and my bestie wore out this single. It's a unicorn 45, too, because the B-side -- Crimson and Clover -- was also a banger. I was way on into my teens before I found out both tracks are covers. It never mattered, of course, because they will always be Joan songs to me. (Wait. Was "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" actually the B-side?)
That whole "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" album is fire. It's a no skips listen. File this song under: Stopped me in my tracks, shook me to my core, and settled in as my life's kick ass companion. It's so very cool that this song has always known me. Why yes -- I do love rock 'n' roll.
Like most anything from the early 1980s, this song makes me think of my childhood bestie. With all the snow talk, snow prep and actual snow -- shes been on my mind a lot this week. Fun times. Snow days were the best in the 80s, right memaws and pawpaws? They're still pretty dang good, too.
Happy snowy Saturday!
