Confessions of a MILF, Viv Albertine, 2012
It's always nice to have Viv Albertine with me navigating life. I've always felt connected to her and I love this song so much. It's a nice little rundown of how not all of us are meant to be married and that's more than OK. Home sweet home means different things to different people. Duh.
No surprise: Viv is one my lifelong heroines. You know Viv, right? She played guitar in the Slits. You know the Slits, right? Punk rock pioneers. Yep. The thing is, though, Viv's punk rock pedigree is cool but that's the least of her artistic contributions to the world. She's an award-winning author and filmmaker, too. She's a fighter. She's a survivor. Even at 70, she's still moving and shaking. She's the original nine lives queen. Goals.
No surprise: I'm not a big fan of marriage. Committed unions? Sure, why not. Partnership agreements? You betcha. Lifelong relationships? Absolutely! Traditional marriage, though? It's a hard pass for me. Choices.
Surprise! Despite not having room for marriage in my own life, I did enjoy the hell out of my little cousin's super special wedding this past weekend. Good times, y'all. What a great couple. No surprise, though, when the preacher spouted the "wives submit" rhetoric for the third time during his wedding monologue, this is the Viv song that was playing in my head. "I chose being an artist over being a wife." You may not get me and that's OK. Viv gets me.
Now, go forth and do Monday, y'all!
