Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, Radiohead, 2007
First things first: In Rainbows ... thoughts? Absolutely stellar Radiohead album, right? Is it their best, though? I'm a holy trinity subscriber, myself -- Kid A, OK Computer and In Rainbows -- all pretty equal in their greatness.
Secondly: I know more than a few people who consider Weird Fishes/Arpeggi as not just the best Radiohead song but one of the best songs ever written. Thoughts? It's a very impressive song, no doubt. It's a piece of art, for sure. This song is so full -- you know what I mean? Weird Fishes sounds like all the feels of life.
Until recently, I had never thought about how we don't experience one emotion at a time. Right? We're not living a flat existence in a flat world, so why would we assume either we're happy or sad or mad or anxious or whatever. It's never really an either/or situation but we're so guilty of thinking in those terms. The past few days, I have been both extremely happy and yet still consumed by the crippling sadness of grief. That's why Weird Fishes is with me -- no, it's not my favorite Radiohead song but it is the one most suited to guide me right now.
Listen to In Rainbows, y'all, and maybe even a little Pablo Honey -- I hate that it never gets any love.
