Part 4: Tease me like you do
Ahhh ... we've made it to The Who/Microwave Dave portion of Muscle Shoals Meets the 70s night two. Double whammy, friends. Microwave Dave on the bill performing The Who’s “Squeeze Box?” Are you serious, universe?
It sure is fun to be a music fan, friends. It must be so fun to be a rockstar. I'll tell you this: Regional superstar, Dave Gallagher, sure makes being a rockstar look fun and easy, too. He’s a born entertainer, y’all. Of the dozens of talented artists who took the stage during Muscle Shoals Meets the 70s, I think it's safe to say Dave is only one who has a day named after him and rightly so. By the way, Microwave Dave Day is coming up soon, too.
Listen, only a seasoned dirty bluesman, such as Dave, could handle the most brilliantly beautiful double entendre (song) of all time. Only Dave, backed by the world-famous Fiddleworms and those sugar sweet harmonies of the Shoals Sisters with support from Pine Hill Haint, Greg Franks, and champion banjo picker, Weston Stewart, could handle doing The Who justice, friends. The Who? Yeah, The Who. The thing was done and it was perfect.
Let me go on record right now and say: I don't know nothing about mama's squeeze box, but Greg Franks's squeeze box showed out the other night. Greg added just the right amount of Haint magic to the tune. Weston’s performance prompted me to write this in my trusty notebook: Banjo needs to be in more songs. Am I right? Those Shoals Sisters, Marie Lewey and Cindy Walker, had me swooning. I almost lost my mind when Dave (Marie and Cindy!) did the "tease me like you do, I'm so in love with you" part. One of my all-time favorite lyrics. Rock on, Microwave Dave!
Truth is, I can't think about “Squeeze Box” too much or it makes me blush, friends. We're all adults here, though. It's no secret this song is about a musician's love for their accordion, right? Of course it is. “Squeeze Box” is a passionate love song about an instrument that’s worthy of its own steamy romance novels. As a grown-up, I do love being in on the rock n’ roll dirty joke. I wonder, reckon how many kids have asked their parents, "What's a squeeze Box?" That makes me giggle.
Stay tuned ... more to come.
Dig worms.
